All the Tea in China - a Mortdecai novel by Kyril Bonfiglioli, soon to be a major film starring Johnny Depp 'One of the funniest writers ever' Uncut After committing a crime anyone but a close relative might forgive, Karli Mortdecai Van Cleef leaves Holland double-quick with his uncle's buckshot lodged firmly in the seat of his breeches. Discretion being the least-idiotic part of valour he decides to hide far away in London, among the tea shops and opium dens. On savouring these Eastern delicacies and knowing an opportunity when he sups upon one, young Karli throws in his lot with an opium clipper bound for China's high seas. Life on the ocean waves, however, is full of perils for an officer and his sensitive digestive tract mountainous waves, an encounter with a malodorous slave ship, the captain's wife's pulse-racingly brief wardrobe, several hordes of pirates, mutiny, the ship's cook's fondness for curry - to name but a few. All the Tea in China is a swaggering, rip-snorting, buckler-swashing tale about one of the men who - for a reasonable fee - made Britain great. 'For those who have learnt to relish his elegant, nasty thrillers, Bonfiglioli is a name hard to forget. This farrago represents a change from the thrillers - a good clean salt-water yarn for the decadent' Irish Press 'Shows his customary inventive comedy and zest for language' Sunday Times 'Bonfiglioli deserves better than cult status' Independent Kyril Bonfiglioli was born on the south coast of England in 1928 of an English mother and Italo-Slovene father. After studying at Oxford and five years in the army, he took up a career as an art dealer, like his eccentric creation Charlie Mortdecai. He lived in Oxford, Lancashire, Ireland and Jersey, where he died in 1985. He wrote four Charlie Mortdecai novels, and a fifth historical Mortdecai novel (about a distinguished ancestor).

I love the Mortdecai series, but they are not for everyone--they are misogynist and racist, in keeping with the era in which they were written, but not to everyone's taste today. This book has fared better. The protagonist is Mortdecai's great-grandfather, a Dutch Jew who is a trader in fine china, and an adventurer. The same humor and erudition are present as in the rest of the Mortdecai series; you will learn interesting facts (why do the British call the lavatory the loo? Why is the evening meal called "dinner" instead of "supper"?), you will increase your vocabulary and you will be entertained by the amoral antics of the protagonist as he travels the world. If you love seafaring novels, there is plenty of sea lore. If you are a fan of novels set in the nineteenth century, you will be most pleased. This is a fun read, and not just for Mortdecai fans.

Book as described. Excellent seller!
An excellent, somewhat dark humored, historical tale of one of Charlie Mortdecai's ancestors.
I saw the movie, I bought the books (that I could buy, without killing the budget), I now love Mordecai. But I don't think we'd get along well.
If you like historical mystery fiction All the Tea is just the cuppa great writing and funny as all get out. Should be on all senior hiigh school and university reading lists.
Absolutely the most interesting and humorous novel I've read since the Mortdecai Mysteries! The author is a one of a kind rare jewel! This went on my library shelf under the "must re-read" section!
The ultimate Victorian romp, plus all you might ever want know about the sailing clipper ships plying between England and China. Fine porcelain, opium and ribald sex all have their place in this hilarious story - hopefully, to be continued.
Maybe Bonfilioli's best novel. Certainly a good place to start, especially if you can accept the proposition that Bonfilioli was, above all else, a suburb satirist. So, put your tongue in your cheek and go along for a hilarious ride.
